Concerning Engine Sounds
Ticking — If a ticking sound comes from your engine bay, it may mean that moving parts need lubrication. It could also mean low oil pressure, a noisy valvetrain, faulty spark plugs, damaged engine accessories, or even a small exhaust leak.
Knocking – This is a step up from a simple ticking and is usually more serious. A knocking sound evolves from ticking, which means something may have progressed. Running a knocking engine can cause serious permanent damage.
Grinding – This sound generally indicates a problem with the engine’s internal components. Metal-on-metal contact can cause damage to the pistons, cylinders, or bearings and needs to be addressed ASAP.
Sputtering – A sound that can indicate a fuel delivery or combustion issue. Common culprits of this can be low fuel pressure, filthy air filter, blocked fuel injectors, and defective spark plugs.
