First Aid Kit – A first aid kit is always an important item to carry in your vehicle.  There are pre-made kits you can purchase, or you can build one yourself.  Bandages, gauze, over-the-counter painkillers, instant cold packs, a needle, rubbing alcohol, sterilizing wipes, and gloves are all must-haves.  This way, no matter the circumstances, you know you will be prepared for an injury.

Jumper Cables – Sometimes the reason you find yourself on the side of the road is that your car’s battery has died.  You can easily store jumper cables in the trunk, or you can purchase a portable jump starter so you can easily get back on the road on your own.

Simple Tool Kit – A few basic tools can be helpful to have on hand.  A multi-tip screwdriver, wrench, pliers, and wire cutters could all be helpful to remedy a small issue until you can get to a repair facility.

Reflective Cones or Triangles – If you find yourself on the side of the road at night or during adverse conditions, any reflective indicators will allow other drivers to see you on the side of the road.  Reflective triangles can be folded down to fit easily into your trunk.

Non-Perishable Food – Imagine you are on a road trip and find yourself on the side of the road without help coming for a while.  Non-perishable foods can help save the day for a nourishing snack.  Granola, nuts, dry cereal, dried fruit, and canned food are helpful.  You should also put bottles of water in your trunk.  Just be sure to check expiration dates every six months.
